Do England Just Need A David Batty?

England triumphed in their first game and got nothing short of what they deserved.

It was a pleasure to watch and a welcome change from our most recent opening games at the World Cup.

A player that stood out in the performance v Tunisia was Jordan Henderson. He didn’t live up to “The Crab” nickname (given as he seems to just pass the ball sideways) and actually sprayed the ball about convincingly.

This England team and the way Southgate has them set up gives us something to be optimistic about. The system really plays to our strengths...ATTACK.

That leads me on to what worries me...Defence. I think against tougher opposition we may get found out, and it’s not the defenders that worries me (the most), it’s what protection they have in front of them. Henderson or Dier, they both don’t have enough bite/tenacity for me.

There’s only one thing for it. Bring back David Batty...

All jokes aside, a player like him would fit perfectly into this system. There hasn’t been many better at breaking down attacks and his distribution going forward was also very under-rated. For that reason he managed to rack up over 40 caps for his country whilst vying for a spot with the likes of Paul Ince and Paul Scholes.

With no one in 23 man squad in the Batty/Makelele mould, we’ll just have to outscore all opposition!
